The best time to visit Varanasi, month by month

Varanasi is a year-round city in the sense that it never closes, and a seasonal one in the sense that the same ghat is a different experience in January and June. Here is what each window actually offers.
October to March — the answer for most people
Daytime temperatures between 10°C and 27°C, clear light for photography, and stone steps you can sit on comfortably at dawn. This is the window every operator recommends, and it is genuinely right.
The trade is crowds. November and December carry Dev Deepawali and the wedding season together, and accommodation on the ghat side prices accordingly. January can bring dense morning fog that delays flights and occasionally cancels the sunrise boat.

April to June — the difficult window
May and June regularly touch 45°C, and the ghat stones stay hot long after the sun's gone down. Sightseeing at midday is miserable, frankly, and for older travellers it's risky. If these really are your only dates, you get two windows: roughly 05:30 to 10:00 and 17:00 to 21:00, with the middle of the day spent indoors. It works. Just know it's half a day of sightseeing, not a full one.
Bringing parents or grandparents in May or June? Plan two short outings a day and pick a hotel you won't mind sitting in for five hours. It's not a heroic plan, but it's the one that works.
July to September — the monsoon
Varanasi's never greener or quieter than now, and the light just after a shower is something else. The downside? The Ganga comes up, the lower steps disappear under water, and boats get limited or stopped when the current's strong. Some years even the aarti platform has to shift further up the ghat.
If you're happy to lose a boat ride to the weather and just want the city quiet, the monsoon's lovely. If that sunrise row is the whole point of your trip, though, come another time.

- If it's atmosphere you're after, November, especially around Dev Deepawali on 24 November 2026. If you want nice weather without the big crowds, February's our favourite. Anywhere from October to March is a safe bet, really.
- Is Varanasi too hot in summer?
- It's hot, no getting round it. May and June often hit 45°C and the ghats hold the heat after dark. You can still do it if you go out 05:30 to 10:00 and again 17:00 to 21:00, but please stay in at midday, especially with older family members.
- Can you take a boat during the monsoon?
- Sometimes. The Ganga rises, the lower steps flood and boat operations are restricted or suspended when the current is strong. If the sunrise boat is the reason for your trip, avoid July to September.
