VIP darshan in Varanasi: what is real and what is being sold to you

"Can you arrange VIP darshan?" is among the most common questions we get, and our answer disappoints people: no, and you should be careful with operators who say yes.
Who actually controls temple access
Entry to Shri Kashi Vishwanath, in all its forms, is controlled by the Shri Kashi Vishwanath Temple Trust. Slots and aartis are booked on the trust's own portal, by the devotee, at the trust's own fees. No travel operator, hotel or cab company holds an allocation to resell.

We copied these off the trust's portal in August and September 2026. They creep up around Shravan and Mahashivratri, so if the checkout page says something different, believe the checkout page. You will still find ₹250 for Sugam on older blogs, and that number is stale. And notice the first row again: plain darshan costs nothing and never has.
What Sugam Darshan actually gets you
A separate, shorter queue, with a Shastri escorting you to the sanctum, locker use and Mewa Laddu prasadam. The Shastri's dakshina is covered by the ticket, so nothing further should be payable once you are inside. If someone inside asks for more, that is not part of the arrangement.
The reason people want a slot is not status. On a festival day or weekend the general queue runs three to six hours. A slot buys back most of a day.
How to book it yourself
Start by typing shrikashivishwanath.org into the address bar with your own fingers. People search "kashi vishwanath vip darshan", tap the first ad, and pay a site that only looks like the temple's. We hear about it every season.
On the real site it sits under Online Services, then Ticket Booking, then Sugam Darshan. The trust's app on Android and iOS sells the same thing if that is easier on a phone. You choose a day and whatever slot is still open, and one booking can carry up to five of you, with any children added on their own lines.
The part that catches families out is the ID. Whatever card number you type in for Papa is the card Papa has to hand over at the gate, the original, not a photo of it. Pay by UPI or card, then print the e-ticket as well as saving it, because your phone will be sitting in a locker when someone asks to see it.
Coming on a foreign passport? There's a different booking route for you, linked on the same site. And whoever you are, a paid slot is gone once it's bought — no refunds, no date changes — so don't book until the trip is certain. If the portal misbehaves, the trust picks up on 7080292930 between nine and six.
What stays outside
Nearly everything. Phones, smartwatches, cameras, power banks and any bag go into the free lockers by the gate, and most people leave leather belts and wallets with their shoes too. Walk in with the ticket, your ID and some change for the offering box. The trust has no formal dress code and only asks for decent clothes, but we'd still cover shoulders and knees, so dress for the temple before you leave the hotel rather than after.
When there are no slots at all
On the heaviest days the trust simply stops selling Sugam darshan and everybody stands in the one queue. This year that happened on three of the four Shravan Mondays (10, 17 and 24 August). Count on Mahashivratri being the same, and most special aarti days too. If your only free day is one of those, either accept the long wait or shift the darshan to the evening before.
What a vehicle operator can legitimately do
- Get you to the correct gate before your slot opens, which matters because the approach changes with that day's police diversions.
- Hold the vehicle nearby for the duration rather than making you re-book for the return.
- Tell you which approach is walkable today and which is barricaded.
- Plan the rest of the day backwards from a fixed slot time, so the aarti and Sarnath still fit.
- Say plainly how long the walk from the drop point is, before you are standing in it.
What to be wary of
An operator quoting you a single price for "VIP darshan included" without naming the temple fee separately. A promise of a specific slot before you have booked it yourself. Anyone claiming a private arrangement with the temple, or that their vehicle can reach the temple gate — no vehicle of any size does; the nearest point is Godowlia, a ten-minute walk through Vishwanath Gali, for everybody.
What we recommend instead
Book the slot yourself on the trust's portal as soon as it opens, 30 days ahead at 11 AM (or Tatkal at 11 AM the day before). Carry the e-ticket and the original ID it was booked against. Arrive at the gate named on the ticket at least thirty minutes early. Then tell us the time, and we will build the driver's day around it.
For Mangla Aarti at 03:00 that means a pickup around 02:00, which sounds brutal and is the single thing regular visitors say is most worth doing.

- Can a travel agent book VIP darshan at Kashi Vishwanath?
- No. Sugam Darshan, the aartis and Rudrabhishek are booked by the devotee on the Shri Kashi Vishwanath Temple Trust's own portal at the trust's fees. Nobody holds a resale allocation, and an operator claiming otherwise is working in a grey area.
- Is general darshan at Kashi Vishwanath free?
- Yes, always. Paid options buy a shorter queue, not entry. On weekends and festival days the general queue runs three to six hours, which is the real reason slots exist.
- How close can a vehicle get to Kashi Vishwanath temple?
- To Godowlia crossing, or the Maidagin side depending on that day's diversions — then roughly a ten-minute walk through Vishwanath Gali. This applies to every vehicle and every operator; it is a municipal restriction on the old city.
- How much is the Kashi Vishwanath VIP darshan ticket?
- What most people call VIP darshan is the trust's Sugam darshan, and it was ₹300 a head on the portal in August 2026. Devotees with a disability pay nothing. Ignore the ₹250 you see quoted elsewhere; that is the old rate, and the checkout page on shrikashivishwanath.org always has the live one.
- Where do I book Kashi Vishwanath VIP darshan online?
- Only on shrikashivishwanath.org (Online Services, then Ticket Booking) or in the trust's own app. Type the address yourself instead of tapping an ad, because copycat sites advertise on exactly this search. Five people fit on one booking, and each of them needs the original of the ID entered.
- Which aarti is worth booking?
- Mangla Aarti at 03:00 (₹500) is the one regular visitors return for and the hardest slot to secure. Sapt Rishi at 19:00 (₹300) is easier to get, but it runs until 20:15, so it clashes with the evening Ganga aarti rather than leading into it. Bhog at 11:15 (₹300) combines most easily with a Sarnath afternoon.
